The Holy Grail? Again?

Today, I would like to revisit an old post I made when I was still relatively new to the world of MTU hunting. In that post I showed my largest (in terms of ISK destroyed) MTU kill at that point in time, which I had labelled as the Holy Grail of MTU kills. Here it is again for you:

Kill: Wulfgar WarHammer (Mobile Tractor Unit)

Quite a beauty, I’m sure you’ll agree, the loot fairy was even kind enough to grant me a decent payout. But how does that kill hold-up to more recent standards, and do I still consider it the Holy Grail? Since the above kill, I have indeed had a much larger kill (again, in terms of ISK destroyed), so sit back and let me tell you that story.

I remember the night well, I had spent most of it chatting with corpmates and other fellow hunters in the MTU Hunting chat channel. I’d only had a couple of unremarkable MTU kills that night, one of which was empty, the other filled with White Glaze, which I didn’t even attempt to haul. My hunting route led me to the system of Mastakomon, one of the quieter systems in the busy region of The Forge. I noticed an MTU on D-Scan named “northwest bouy”, and went through the usual procedure of probing it down.

When I landed on-grid with the MTU, I noticed immediately that something was quite amiss. CONCORD was also on-grid which meant that something had recently gone down there, and when I checked the MTU for it’s owner (right-click, show info), I found that he was in local with me. The race was on, then, to pop this MTU before the owner came back for it, and with a Noctis already on D-Scan, I wasted no time.

Kill: DAS BOOT Saraki (Mobile Tractor Unit)

The Noctis never appeared, and the kill went smoothly, as most do, giving me the largest MTU killmail I have ever received (at the time of posting this). But what exactly went down here? Why was this MTU filled with the remains of what was quite obviously a big ol’ missile boat? The MTU’s owner didn’t have any recent losses that would indicate he lost such a ship, perhaps he chose not to sign-up to zkillboard, meaning any losses to NPCs wouldn’t show? Even if that was the case though, why was CONCORD on grid?

I always share my interesting MTU kills with my fellow hunters in the MTU Hunting chat channel in-game, and in this instance, I’m very glad I did. Fellow MTU hunter, Rosov Aulmais, had actually heard of this corp before, it seems they actually had a reputation for losing expensive ships in failtastic ways to CONCORD.

MTU Hunting chat channel

This prompted me to dig a little further, and looking back through my screenshots, I noticed that one of DAS BOOT Saraki’s corpmates (most likely his main) named loren cushing was also in local. I checked loren’s killboard and there it was, the missle boat loss in all it’s splendour:

Kill: loren cushing (Raven Navy Issue)

Mystery solved? Well, it still doesn’t explain how or why he is getting himself CONCORDed, only that it is just something he does from time to time. I would’ve asked him, but I didn’t think he would’ve been too cooperative with someone who just gave him yet another red mark on his already-quite-colourful killboard.

So, do I consider this kill to be the Holy Grail of MTU kills? Well, in terms of ISK destroyed, it is certainly my largest, but the ISK received is still lower than my original kill, earning myself only 100m ISK this time thanks to the faction ballistic control that dropped. We also have to consider that other hunters get much larger MTU kills than this all the time.

To answer my own question, no, I don’t think the above kill is the Holy Grail, nor do I still consider my original kill all those years ago to be it either. Perhaps the amount of ISK an MTU is worth is just a facade in this respect, and the only thing that gives an MTU kill true worth is a good story to go along with it? I have a feeling that if I actually do find the Holy Grail of MTU kills, I’ll know it instinctively.

The search continues.

Bonus Edit!

I spoke with fellow hunter, Rosov Aulmais, again after uploading this post, and he had a new theory as to why the pilot CONCORDs himself on the regular. Some mission runners actually shoot the cheap wrecks in their mission site so that their MTU will tractor-in the good stuff faster. Shooting a wreck that belongs to an alt will get the space police on you pretty fast. This would certainly explain the sheer frequency in which the pilot lost his ships.

Sage advice. Unless you’re a ganker, there is no need to set your button red.

Naming Surprises and Cheeky Disguises 2

In a previous post I showed you some of the interesting MTUs I have spotted that have been named by their owners. In this post I’ll show you some more.

MTUs that have been renamed by their owners are a somewhat rare sight, so whenever I spot one I always make sure to take a screenshot of it. It’s a little like trainspotting in a way, although much more likely to cause your friends and family to give you that look of concern mixed with disappointment, should you ever tell them what you spent your Friday night doing.

Rifter

The owner of this MTU attempted to disguise it as a popular frigate, but he couldn’t pull the wool over my eyes, which I decided to subtly let him know in local.

Local Chat

I do wonder if this naming strategy ever actually works, I find it funny regardless.

LGBT+ Rights!

The owner of these MTUs decided to use them to inject some sociopolitics into EVE, something which is almost always assured to get a reaction from others these days.

Forlong MTU

I think a more appropriate name would have been “Not Forlong MTU”, as it was deleted shortly after this screenshot was taken.

Todays Poop

Whilst a few corpmates and I were engaging in some corp activities together, we spotted this MTU on D-Scan. From the name, we suspected that this MTU may have been used for illegally storing human effluence, and so we popped it shortly after taking care of our other business.

Next up, we have a few MTUs with Russian names to look at. I have used an online Cyrillic keyboard to type these words out, and then put them through an online Russian to English translator.

Russian

Бабушкин сундук

Russian

Тянучка – М
Translates to: Tynuchka – M (noun. stickjaw)

цуксо

If any Russians are reading this, please let us know the validity of these translations.

Coward Toys

I have a feeling that perhaps the owner of this MTU was making some kind of statement about people who hunt MTUs, but I guess we’ll never know for sure.

Cargo Container

A corpmate found this sneaky ‘Magpie’ MTU hidden away behind an acceleration gate in the system of Penirgman, and decided to share the kill with us. That’s one benefit of being in a corporation with other MTU hunters.

Another example of a named MTU can be found in the thread on the Official EVE Online Forums that I use to promote this blog.

Nunosh

I’ll make sure to keep an eye out for that one!

Finally, let us take a look at a mail I received from a friend, a fellow MTU hunter named Berger Luckmann.

Berger Luckmann

Oh, let me grab those killmails for you.

Kill: Dace Cad (Mobile Tractor Unit)
Kill: Dace Cad (Drake)

Pix Severus hasn't been here

Thank you for taking care of that one, Berger, it’s very much appreciated. The name of that MTU is a reference to the containers I leave around highsec named “Pix Severus was here o/”, which you can read more about in this post.

..and that’s everything, all examples of named MTUs I’ve encountered over the years have now been covered. I’ll continue to keep an eye-out for more named MTUs in the future, but if you spot any on your travels, please take a screenshot and send it to me via EVE Mail in-game.

Naming Surprises and Cheeky Disguises

Naming Surprises and Cheeky Disguises

As I travel through highsec, scanners hot and probe fingers itching for some action, occasionally I’m met with a nice surprise on D-Scan. MTUs, like ships, can be renamed by their owner, but it seems that most people either don’t know this, or simply can’t be bothered to do it (probably the latter). So when I spot a named MTU, it is always rare, and always gets my attention.

In this post I’m going to show you some of the weird and wonderful named MTUs I’ve encountered over the years.

Sisters Combat Scanner Probe

Click on image for full size.

Some owners of MTUs attempt to disguise them by naming them after other things you’ll often see on D-Scan, in this case the owner named his MTU after the tool that would be used to probe it down. To avoid being tricked by this, always set your D-Scan to be ordered by Type, and have the Type column visible. This disguise was cheekier than a hamster with a face-full of nuts, and makes me smile every time I remember it.

Squidward

The owner of this MTU named it after a popular cartoon character, from a cartoon I never really watched (born too early, sorry guys).

0w0 what's this

I think this is the only time I’ve seen an emote used in the name of an MTU. This screencap is accentuated by the named Dominix above the MTU, who ironically GTFO when I dropped my probes on him.

Borderhopping

Some pilots use their MTUs for casual racism aside the typical PvE activities.

little beefy

I felt a little bad about popping “little beefy”, but cute name or not, this thing had to go.

#hashtag

This mess of an MTU name looks like a hashtag gone wrong; This is your brain on social media, kids.

Don't You Forget About Me

Whoops! Looks like this isn’t the first MTU this owner has lost.

suc it

Click on image for full size.

This rare ‘Magpie’ MTU did all the ‘suc’ it was ever going to do, before I came along.

I also remember one time, my corpmate and fellow MTU hunter, Alexis Thunderkunt, had an experience with a named MTU.

Alexis Thunderkunt > Lol, a Packrat MTU called “Touch/Steal = Suicide Gank”
Pix Severus > is anyone there with it?
Alexis Thunderkunt > Only one other in system, in a Proteus. He has combat probes out
Pix Severus > totally not bait

Bait or not, Alexis managed to kill that MTU regardless:

Kill: Jeremiah 1 (‘Packrat’ Mobile Tractor Unit)

That’s all for now, there are more of these to come in the near future so keep an eye out for that. Speaking of keeping an eye out, if you spot any MTUs with funny names out there, consider taking a screenshot and mailing it to me (Pix Severus). I’ll consider some kind of recompense for doing so, a small amount of ISK perhaps?

Conversation of an MTU Hunter

In my previous post, I talked about how I ended up in a system called Ahmak, and the lengths I went to in order to pop the single MTU I had found there. This post will detail my conversation with the Ahmak locals after this event, and the social experiences that followed thereafter.

In my opinion, a good MTU Hunter shouldn’t be afraid to converse with those around him while he is out on a hunt. Many new roads are opened up just by talking to people in this game, which can ultimately lead to more fun.

The first person to talk to me that night was notme7, a man with scary eyes who contacted my mission running alt in local to tell her that she looked cool.

notme7

..and people say I look creepy!

It wasn’t until after the MTU had been killed, and I’d returned to the station to stash the loot, that I was contacted by another local.

Symion Del’Vari > o/  Pix Severus
Pix Severus > Symion Del’Vari o/
Symion Del’Vari > Looking for structures today?
Pix Severus > yes, just popped an mtu in this system  Kill: Akza Agittain (Mobile Tractor Unit)
Symion Del’Vari > Ah stray MTU, just lazy.
Pix Severus > i got some really nice stuff from the mtu before that though  Kill: Febelstragen (Mobile Tractor Unit)
Symion Del’Vari > Damn.
Pix Severus > poor fellow must have died during his mission, and got sucked into his own mtu
Pix Severus > his mission was long despawned, couldve been weeks ago
Symion Del’Vari > yup, looks like it, thats a full fit and  Defective Current Pump  Armor Plates from the salvage
Pix Severus > yup, some of the crystals were used too
Symion Del’Vari > You get a lot of MTU work?
Pix Severus > i stopped ganking for a while because it got boring, repaired my sec status with tags, and pretty much all i do now is mtu popping
Pix Severus > keeps me busy

Symion Del’Vari seemed like a nice enough fellow, and I was more than happy to chat with him, especially as I’d had a couple of beers at this point.

Pix Severus > oh, ill show you the best mtu i ever found  Kill: Wulfgar WarHammer (Mobile Tractor Unit)
Pix Severus > similar story to the other one i think, sucked into his own mtu after dying in his mission
Symion Del’Vari > Imperial Navy Heat Sink  True Sansha Tachyon Beam Laser oh that hurts. lol
Pix Severus > yup, loot fairy was kind too
Symion Del’Vari > got thosse?
Symion Del’Vari > -s
Pix Severus > got the three guns and 1 heat sink
Pix Severus > made around 300m
Symion Del’Vari > oh, close to plexing for the month!
Pix Severus > aye not too bad, kills like those come around rarely though
Symion Del’Vari > I am surprised mission runners dont return for their MTUs though.
Pix Severus > i was too, but i had an interesting convo with a fellow whose mtu i popped that cleared things up for me
Pix Severus > he didnt know how to scan, and none of his characters had any scanning skills
Pix Severus > so they die in the mission, or hand the mission in to the npc prematurely, then they simply cannot find their mtu again
Symion Del’Vari > Ouch, I always mark mine, not that I leave MTUs laying about,.
Pix Severus > i mark every mtu i find too, makes for nice safespots
Pix Severus > lived as -10 in highsec for a while, kinda need all the bms all you can get
Pix Severus > -all, im drinking
Symion Del’Vari > drinking and MTUs killing, a combo! lol
Pix Severus > haha

We talked about a lot more than just MTU Hunting that night, from POS bashing, to manufacturing, to ganking, and beyond. I won’t post the entire thing, however, as this post would become far too long. After a while, notme7 joined the conversation.

Pix Severus > went for smoke
Pix Severus > yeah, but im supplementing it with skill injectors, and im trying to fix this char because his skills are a total mess
notme7 > yay another smoker o/
Pix Severus > o/  notme7
Pix Severus > so im just making a nuisance of myself, popping mtus in highsec while running missions, earning isk for those sweet skill injectors
notme7 > im odd i really like to mine lol
Pix Severus > i used to mine, but i stopped a few years back during hulkageddon when my alt lost some sweet hulks to gankers
Pix Severus > this was before CODE. and all that stuff
Symion Del’Vari > Yup, now it Macks or Skiffs
notme7 > ya i remeber hulk days, i just did missions during that time
Pix Severus > its crazy to think that more mining ships die now, after all exhumers/barges were buffed
notme7 > ya seeing alot of kills lately
Pix Severus > back in the day you could sneeze in the direction of a retriever and it would explode
notme7 > looool
Pix Severus > ive got to say, i should come out to the sticks more often, i never get to chat like this in the systems closer to jita/dodixie
Symion Del’Vari > notme7 owns this sytem, I just rent off him ;)

The conversation took many twists and turns that night, but ended up with us all setting each other blue.

Pix Severus > im adding you guys to blue btw, so rare to find people willing to chat in local these days, im not getting sentimental or anything, im just quite drunk
Symion Del’Vari > lol, earns us a blue! hehe
notme7 > to be honest u were red-orange- and now blue, sorry this is eve lol

The following day, I left Ahmak to continue hunting, but notme7 caught-up with me via EVE Mail later that day.

notme7

He has his own chat channel?

I joined his chat channel, and over the next few days I chatted with notme7, and his friends, and got to know them. Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, and I eventually found that rarely a day went by when I wasn’t chatting with notme7 in EVE.

His channel has grown a lot lately, with many of the locals from the area eventually finding their way to it after speaking with notme7 in local. One of the biggest impacts on the channel’s popularity was the introduction of Madenofpain, CEO of the corporation Gunsmith Kats [GNKT], who were operating out of the system next-door, Jarshitsan, at the time. Many of her corp members use the channel now which has resulted in it being much more active. Furthermore, they now operate out of a Citadel in Ahmak itself.

I still use the channel to this day, I post my MTU killmails in there at times when the chat has died down, to help stimulate further discourse. If you wish to join the channel, notme7 has assured me you will be most welcome, no matter what your chosen activities are in-game.

I’ve made a lot of friends in Ahmak, and I’ve had a lot of fun talking with them over the last few months, and to think it all started with finding an MTU on D-Scan in a quiet little system in the middle of nowhere.
